    Description

Civil War Store Card for William McDonald, Grocer in Memphis, Tennessee
Fuld  TN600D-1a (copper)     R-7     NGC  MS-63 BN          ex Alan Bleviss and rare Tennessee merchant
Mr. McDonald was one of two Memphis tokens who used store card tokens for wholesale rather than retail purposes during the Civil War.  Instead of using the tokens to make change for small purchases in his store, the tokens were used in transactions with the laborers who hauled the items he stocked in bulk quantities from the docks on the Mississippi River to his place of business.  Due to the size and value of the shipments, the tokens had a stated value of 25 cents instead of the typical one-cent valuation of most Civil War tokens.  These tokens were that same composition and size as their one-cent counterparts.  The tokens were obtained from Cincinnati token maker John Stanton.  A single obverse die was combined with four stock dies for token production.  All of the store card varieties for this merchant are rare.  This is a very nice uncirculated specimen that was previously in the collection of Alan Bleviss as noted on the slab label.
Shipping is free.  Should this token fail to meet your expectations, it can be returned within 30 days for a full refund.  Sales tax, if applicable,
is collected by Ebay and submitted directly to state authorities.
