    Description

Norwich, Connecticut, civil war token, store card type, CT 345-aA 1a, NGC MS64, SINGLE MERCHANT TOWN, R-1, copper. Not a mistake in looking at the first picture and seeing a label that says NY 630-Q 1a.
The earlier editions of references placed this token in error as a New York issue, 630-Q 1a. The piece is still in the NGC holder identified as such, but the new references have identified the piece as Norwich, Connecticut. The "CITY OF NEW YORK" was the name of a steamship, not the place of issue. The full legend on the obverse shows "CITY OF NEW YORK", "I.O.U. ONE CENT", with the date, 1863, below. The reverse shows an Indian head facing left, with stars around the border. Both sides are a medium to dark brown with subdued luster visible over all the surfaces. A couple of small darker spots can be seen on the reverse and one on the obverse.
